Houston-area police warn homeowners of scammers posing as public works employees

Police say these alleged thieves claim they work for "the water department" in order to distract you.

WEST UNIVERSITY PLACE, Texas — The West University Place Police Department posted a video on Facebook Tuesday morning warning residents about crooks gaining access to homes in the area.

The department said the suspects tell victims they work for the "water department" or they are "tree trimmers."

After they gain the confidence of the homeowners, one of the suspects distracts the victim while another enters the home and steals items like jewelry and money, the department said.

The post reminded residents a West University Public Works employee will never ask to go inside a home and will always be wearing a West University Public Works uniform.

In the video, one of the suspects can be seen ringing the doorbell and speaking with the homeowner but the homeowner does not let them inside.

Anyone in doubt or would like to report a suspicious person should call the West University Police Department at 713-668-0330.
