Man killed in Canal Street shooting was Lake Charles evacuee, NOPD Chief says

Two suspects are in police custody right now, they are also Hurricane Laura evacuees.

NEW ORLEANS — A Hurricane Laura evacuee from Lake Charles was shot and killed on Canal Street Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said that the victim, as well as the two people in custody as possible suspects, are all from the Lake Charles area. All three evacuated to New Orleans because of Hurricane Laura.

"The city will not tolerate such behavior on our streets," Ferguson said.

The shooting happened around 12:30 p.m. near the corner of Canal Street and St. Charles Avenue. Police say shots were also fired in the 500 block of Canal Street, but no one was wounded.

It is unclear if both incidents are connected.
