After Astros sponsor softball team, the little league is so popular, there's a wait list

Just when you thought you couldn't love the Astros more, they're making dreams come true by footing the bill.

HOUSTON — If you thought you couldn't love the Astros anymore, check this out: They are Standing for Houston by sponsoring several little leagues across the city.

Four miles from Minute Maid Park, in the barrio, the Magnolia Park Little League is thriving thanks to the 'Stros.

But one group of girls are knocking it out of the park.

Magnolia Park is in the east end. It's one of Houston's oldest Hispanic neighborhoods and it's little league team was defunct for years.

But in 2016, the Astros approached the organization, interested in helping to bring the league back.

Three years later, "we've got kids on the waiting list, trying to get on those teams," said Michael Lopez, President of the Magnolia Park Little League.

"I think it’s awesome that the Astros give us a lot of things to use, like our jerseys," said 2nd grader Katelynn Becerra.

The Astros Foundation is a 501-c3 non-profit organization for the Houston Astros.

And the "Community Leaders" program is designed to connect the Astros with corporations looking to help community groups fund these little leagues by paying for field maintenance, umpires, uniforms, equipment, and registration costs.

"The Astros helped us convert this into a softball-only field." said Lopez.

More than 30,000 children across Houston have been impacted by the program, including Alyssa Lopez. "I’ve just made more friends."

"A lot of times it makes me happy because my family’s cheering for me," said Becerra.

It's confidence created by the community to support a group of girls who now know the sky's the limit.
