LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas — A"lock in" was lifted for all campuses in Cleveland ISD and Tarkington ISD Wednesday afternoon after it was confirmed the suspect accused of fatally shooting one person and injuring three others shot and killed himself.
Police were looking for the suspected shooter, 65-year-old Pavol Vido, who shot four people, including a deputy, at two businesses in Liberty County. One of the four people shot died from her injuries, police said.
Four campuses in Tarkington ISD are about three miles from where the shootings happened. Tarkington ISD officials said students living on CR 2247 and CR 2248 will not have bus service due to road closures and will remain at the their campus until they can be picked up.
At first, the schools went into a lockdown which required students to go to their “safe place” but after an update from authorities they have shifted to the shelter-in-place protocol.
No one is allowed in or out. Tarkington ISD has two school resource officers on campuses.
The superintendent said because of the ongoing situation in the community the district was also working with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Public Safety.
He said extra officers have been dispatched and are conducting patrols outside campuses.
The district said "TPS and TIS Awards are cancelled for Wednesday. Awards will be presented in class tomorrow at the following times:
9 a.m. - 2nd grade
10 a.m. - 1st grade
10:45 a.m. - 3rd grade
11:30 a.m. - 4th and 5th grade
Kindergarten parties are also cancelled and no PM PK Wednesday."
There were award ceremonies also scheduled at elementary schools in Cleveland ISD but they have been rescheduled due to the "lock-in," said Susan Ard, director of communications for Cleveland ISD.
Ard said students and staff inside the campuses are able to carry on a normal school day, but no one is allowed in or out. She said the environment is safe and normal. She said one CISD officer is on every campus.
