HOUSTON --- Some students expressed surprised to learn that an Alief Independent School District teacher is accused of carrying 53 pounds of marijuana in her car.
According to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff s Department, Percy Melton was pulled over Tuesday morning between the towns of Vinton and Sulphur in Louisiana.
At Elsik High School band students who were getting ready for the fall semester on Thursday said they ve heard all about what happened to Melton.
It s all on the social networks and everything, said 11th grader Leandria Walker.
Some students said that Melton must not have been thinking about the consequences.
You never know if you re going to get caught, but since she got caught, our school s on the news and it gives us all a bad name. I think it was a dumb move, said sophomore Serenity McCants.
The marijuana has a street value of $120,000, deputies said.
That s a lot. Why would you have that in your car, McCants said.
The Alief Independent School District said as soon as Melton s contract kicks in for the upcoming school year, she will be suspended pending the outcome of the criminal investigation in Louisiana.
At Melton s home, an unidentified man told KHOU 11 News that Melton is doing OK and said he hopes she will be released on bond soon.
As dozens of people tweeted about Melton's arrest, they also tweeted about another teacher who is in trouble with the law.
A warrant has been issued for Sirma Frederick, a teacher at Budewig Intermediate in Alief. Police said they found 26.9 pounds of marijuana in her home.
Houston police and Frederick s landlord made entry into her home because people had not seen her in awhile. It appears Frederick may be out on vacation and could return just before school starts.
