CenterPoint warns of scammers targeting customers over the phone

CenterPoint officials told us scammers are targeting utility customers around the country.

HOUSTON - There's a day for just about everything and Wednesday is National Utility Scam Awareness Day.

Ironically, some Houstonians are experiencing a scam where the scammer tries to get money from them over the phone.

Rex Solomon told KHOU 11 he got a call from someone claiming they worked for CenterPoint Energy.

Centerpoint officials say those calls are not coming from them.

Wednesday morning, Solomon says someone claimed to be Centerpoint when they called his jewelry business, telling his employee to pay up on a "past due bill" or lose electricity.

Solomon dialed the given call back number and told the alleged rep this:

"Yes, you are an electric company and you own all the transmission lines in the greater Houston area but you do not provide residential or business electrical services. You provide natural gas services in this unregulated market... and then there was just a click." said Solomon.

The number they were calling from is almost identical to a real CenterPoint number.

"I've spoken to another business owner this morning that had the exact same phone call." said Solomon.

CenterPoint officials told us scammers are targeting utility customers around the country.

They tell us their agents will never demand banking or credit card information over the phone.

Instead, they encourage you to call a number listed on your bill or their website.

They also ask you report it to your local utility provider and the Better Business Bureau.

“It's a numbers game. The more you hit, the more the chance that somebody's going to bite." said Solomon.

He hopes that sharing his story puts the odds in your favor. “It's the season to be scammed and watch out for it!"

CenterPoint officials also say you should report any suspicious activity to police.
