HOUSTON — A Rio Grande Valley man battling leukemia received a surprising call at just the right time on Sunday.
At first, Diesel Dave joked around a bit with Fonseca about a T-shirt purchase he made from DieselPower.com. Fonseca explained to him that he was in Houston undergoing treatment for cancer and was having trouble figuring out which purchase he was referring to.
That is when Diesel Dave asked what kind of cancer he has. Fonseca, married and a father of four, explained he has been fighting leukemia for almost a year now, but that he had just received the good news that he will be getting a bone marrow transplant.
Fonseca says he will have a 100-day recovery before he gets to return home to his family.
Diesel Dave then dropped some great news on Fonseca. When he made his most recent purchase, Fonseca was entered into a contest and was picked as the lucky winner of a $100,000 cash prize.
“Are you serious?” Fonseca said repeatedly over the phone.
“I’m about as serious as you possibly can be,” Diesel Dave replied. “And to me, it sounds like it’s not going to anybody who needs it more.”
Fonseca could be heard breaking down into tears over the great news. Diesel Dave also appeared to be touched to deliver such great news to someone who could put the winnings to good use.
“I’m sure you’ve got a few bills you’ve got to pay,” Diesel Dave told Fonseca who apologized for getting emotional. “I’m getting emotional too, so we’ll cry together on this one.”
“This all happened for a reason, I mean, someone’s looking out for you and you entered a contest, and you won because you needed it the most,” Diesel Dave said.
Heavy D, also of “Diesel Brothers,” says they have given away about 100 diesel trucks since they started their business. However, this time, they decided to give away $100,000 cash.
Diesel Dave says it couldn’t have been a better time to make the change since the money will be much more beneficial to Fonseca than a new truck.
“The best part of our business is doing giveaways and meeting the winners! It’s especially awesome when everything falls into place for someone to win who really needs it and deserves it,” Diesel Dave posted in a video of him making the call.
