Former first lady Michelle Obama meets local book club for brunch after Instagram invite

It’s a moment that’s now written a new chapter for their boutique book club - one they’ll never forget.

HOUSTON — Former first lady Michelle Obama’s visit to Houston was short, but filled with inspiration for everyone she met, especially one local book club.

It was the moment they’d been waiting for when they all stood up to cheer - the moment Michelle Obama walked through the door.

“Not truly believing that it would happen, but we posted on Instagram asking her to join us for brunch," Alex Moller said.

The former first lady picked their book club, HTX Book and Brunch, to be part of for the day.

“If you don’t schedule the things that you want in life, like you do all the other stuff, it doesn’t happen," Obama said to the club.

"She just automatically makes you feel comfortable, like she was a part of our book club. She was a book club member today," president Cindy Carter said.

For Alex Moller, surreal is an understatement, sitting next to her idol the entire time.

“I think we were in there for about five minutes and then suddenly, you just felt comfortable. It was comfortable, like she was just like a regular person. It just felt easy after that," Moller said.

It’s a moment that’s now written a new chapter for their boutique book club - one they’ll never forget.

“It’s just really cool for us to be able to experience this moment together," Carter said.

As they walked out of Grace’s restaurant, like fate, another group of young ladies walked in. First dinner and then, later, they too had a conversation with the former first lady.

The young women, all seniors at Aldine ISD, were given tickets by Michelle Obama herself to attend Saturday night’s event.

“To be able to be in the same venue as Michelle Obama, that’s going to be powerful," Superintendent of Aldine ISD Dr. LaTonya Goffney said. "We want them to graduate with choices and opportunities, but to be with someone who’s been in the White House, it’s going to be amazing for our students."

Senior Angela Cruz said she was inspired by Obama.

“It teaches people who look like me, who look my neighbors, who look like the people who go to my school that we can all grow to be who she is, and really impact people," she said.
