PEARLAND, Texas — One of the unintended consequences of the partial government shutdown is hungry pets. Some good folks in Pearland have now set up a pet food bank to help out furloughed workers and their four-legged friends.

Volunteers are packing up supplies for distribution.

The nonprofit is collecting food and supplies at seven city locations.

Applicants or donors are encouraged to visit www.pearlandpets.com/assistance. The goal is to provide each applicant with 30 days of food for all pets in their home.

“Everybody thinks about their pets as part of their family, and nobody wants their family to go without," said Dorian Strickland, the group’s director. “When push comes to shove, pets are last on the list.”

The group also needs volunteers.

“If you’re 16 and older, we're happy to have the help," Strickland said. "We've had a lot of people younger than that who come with their parents.”

Young and old are ready to lend a helping hand to man’s best friends.
