VETERANS DAY 2018 | Houston celebrates heroes with downtown parade

Houston's Veteran's Day parade may have been canceled last year, but hopefully the message was made clear today: We're glad you're home. We're grateful for your service. Thank you.

HOUSTON — Houston celebrated Veteran’s Day with a parade in downtown Sunday.

The parade was canceled last year.

In cold, rainy weather the former service members marched on.

The turnout was lower compared to some of the city's other parades, but to those who attended, the parade and recognition of military service was important.

"I think it's important to honor the sacrifice veterans have made," said former Staff Sgt. Anthony Guillory as he passed out small flags to parade watchers.

"I was one of the lucky ones. I came home. There's a lot of people that gave a lot for the country so I think it's important to honor that."

Guillory served three tours in the Middle East as a soldier.

He thinks vets are treated better today than when he returned.

"I think there's a lot of pride and respect for the soldiers coming back today and I think it's well deserved," Guillory said.

Memorial Day is for the soldiers who died in battle. Veteran’s Day is a celebration for the men and women who have returned to civilian life, some with wounds; both seen and unseen.

A health fair was held prior to the celebration in front of City Hall by healthcare industry companies and providers.
