How to live stress-free during an election cycle

A majority of KHOU 11 viewers say they feel relieved now that they've voted. But we want to take it one step further. Let's turn that relief into stress-free living during an election cycle.

HOUSTON — Does it feel like election overload?

Between Election Day and living with the final results the day after, it's hard to get past anything related to the midterms.

A majority of KHOU 11 viewers say they feel relieved now that they've voted. But we want to take it one step further.

Let's turn that relief into stress-free living during an election cycle.

"The first thing you have to try and do is put your tongue straight up on top of your mouth," said Joseph Cyrus, who co-owns the Healing Waters Float Spa in Montrose. "And when you put your tongue on your palette, it’s similar to when a baby sucks on his thumb and it instantly brings you down to center."

Cyrus, who leads meditation classes, offers a second breathing exercise.

"The second one is lightly and very gently, slowly breathing through your nose," he said. "Slowly and deeply, inhaling only through your nose and exhaling only through your nose."

If you want to take your breathing exercises one step further, try an hour inside a float tank that's filled with so much Epsom salt an adult can easily float.

Yoga is another way to relax. Boxing and lifting weights are others.

You can also try taking a 24-hour break from your cellphone or social media.

And, if all else fails: go outside, walk and breathe in the fresh fall air.
