The sight of sound with Ann Marie Vancas

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but for one local artist beauty is in the sound coming from her headphones. Great Day Houston's Cristina Kooker met up with an artist at the Winter Street Studios who paints the sight of sound.

Ann Marie Vancas has a condition called Synesthesia - a neurological condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway (e.g., hearing) leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway (e.g., vision).

She turned her diagnosis into an art, a hobby and now a career. Ann Marie always paints while listening to music which allows her to release her emotions while she paints. Her work is predominately displayed throughout Houston, and in the numerous art shows and exhibitions. Her artistic style is abstract and surrealism with a slight emphasis on fauvism. Her unique version is what she calls “Sensuism.”
