Hit the road with these healthy snacks

Registered dietitian Amy Goodson shared some easy, healthy snacks for your summer road trip

HOUSTON — Millions of Americans will hit the road this weekend for the July 4th holiday. That could mean a long car ride and a tendency to load up on junk food. There are healthy alternatives available.  Registered dietitian Amy Goodson shared some snacks that are better for you and taste better too.

Pack LaCroix Sparkling Water in your fridge or cooler.  It has zero calories, zero sweeteners, and zero sodium.  There are more than 20 flavors, all derived from natural fruit essences.  Plus, it's the perfect mixer for fun fizzy drinks and mocktails.  For more information on LaCroix Sparkling Water, log on to LaCroixWater.com.

Amy Goodson, RD, showed us a refreshing Patriotic Punch, made with LaCroix Cúrate Sparkling Water, fresh lime juice, blueberries, raspberries, and mint.  For the Patriotic Punch recipe, click here.

ALOHA plant-based protein bars are a good way to get your protein in.  They are packed with 14 grams of protein, low in natural sugar with only 3-5 grams per bar.  The bars are organic, vegan, non-GMO, free of gluten, dairy, soy, and stevia, and have no artificial ingredients.  In Houston, ALOHA can be picked up at HEB and Sprouts Farmers Market.  Plus, keep an eye out for special coupons.  For more information on ALOHA plant-based protein bars, log on to ALOHA.com.

Pack a homemade dip with fresh dill to have with your fresh veggies.  The secret ingredient is a2 Milk, which is 100% cows milk, but without the a1 protein.  Ordinary cows' milk naturally contains a mix of a1 and a2 protein, but published research suggests that milk without the a1 protein can help some people avoid stomach discomfort.  Find a2 Milk at Kroger and Whole Foods.  For more information on a2 Milk, log on to a2Milk.com.

RW Garcia's Organic Corn Chips or 3 Seed Crackers are a better-for-you snack with lots of flavors.  RW Garcia's new Yellow and Blue Corn Chips are USDA 100% organic and have fewer calories, fat, and sodium than the leading brands.

Bob's Red Mill new granola is the perfect snack if you are craving something a little sweet.  It's made with maple syrup, so it's lower in sugar, with 7 grams or less per serving.  It has clean ingredients: hearty oats, seeds, and berries.  Plus, it is perfect for those on a specialty diet, because it is free of soy, dairy, eggs, and gluten.  Check out all four flavors: Lemon Blueberry, Cranberry Almond,  Coconut Spice, and Maple Sea Salt
