Rodeo ready: Dress to impress without breaking the bank and other money-saving tips

We've put together some tips to help you save money and look good while doing it.

HOUSTON — RodeoHouston is all about the competition, concerts and clothes.

Men and women dress to impress by decking out in their best western gear.

“Hey it’s Houston, Texas, so you have to look the style," Owner of Designer Dive Consignment Store Michelle Puckett said.

Ready or not, it’s time to rodeo.

“You got your jackets, suedes, leathers, custom made boots," Puckett said. "It’s the only time of the year that they go all out for Houston rodeo. They want to look that style and look Texan.”

So you want to look your best for the Wild West, but maybe, you’re not ready to waste your wallet.

Puckett says it’s stores like hers that can help you keep your cash while also showing off a little class, like the Double D Ranchwear jacket she’s wearing.

New in the store, she says, it’s about $600, but her price tag is a little cheaper and then some.

“They would get it for 50% off which would be $84. Come on, $84. That is a great rodeo budget," Puckett said.

Let’s say your taste goes beyond the tassels. Rodeo days are full of discounts.

Hump Days are a good time to head out for Free Family Wednesdays, where seniors, 60 and older and children, 12 and under, get onto rodeo grounds for free until 7 p.m. They can enjoy $2 rides and games and snacks until 4 p.m.

If you plan to attend the rodeo more than twice, a season pass is the way to go. They're $35 and will get you into the grounds, carnival and Livestock Show free throughout the three-week event. The daily charge is $15 for adults and $5 for kids ages 3 to 12. Under three and they're free.

The half-price carnival packs also make good cents -- and sense. The $10 packs are worth $38. The $50 packs are worth $138.

If your kids are too young for carnival rides, head to the petting zoos or Agventure inside NRG Center.

And if you pay for a concert ticket, the carnival and livestock show are included.

Parking can also get pricey, cut you can save more money by taking the Metro rail or the Rodeo Park and Ride. Those rides can cost anywhere from $2.50 to $7.00.
