A drone show, free admission and more -- here’s what’s new at RodeoHouston this year

NRG Center has become a complete construction zone as vendors have started building out their stores.

HOUSTON — Get your boots on and cowboy hats ready because the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo is officially one week away and the setup is already underway.

The dirt was being put down inside NRG Stadium with the shows starting in just a week.

NRG Center has become a complete construction zone as vendors have started building out their stores.

“We are a week away, can you believe it?" RodeoHouston President and CEO Chris Boleman said. “We really plan this show the minute the last one closes, it takes us a full year.

You can expect lots of new excitement this year. On opening day alone, the first 10,000 guests will get custom-made howdy bobbleheads.

On March 4, for the first time, there will be a drone light show at the rodeo.

“It’s going to have 200 drones and they’re going to have all these different kinds of designs that connect to the mission of the show, which is, of course, is promoting agriculture and giving back to the youth of Texas. So I can't wait to see that. That’s going to be something really fresh and cool," Boleman said.

March 8 will be the first-ever Community Day where they will offer free admission for all guests who get there before noon.

“We know people have gone through some tough economic times over the last couple of years, so TC Energy is partnering with us there. And we’re very pumped to be able to invite people in. If they’re here before noon, they get in for free. We will have a number of discounts throughout the grounds," Boleman said.

Inside NRG Center, expect to see several new vendors to shop at - including Tomball’s own Jayden Layne boutique. This will be their debut at the rodeo.

At the carnival, you can check out the new foods and rides coming this year.

Get a taste of the Hot Nashville Cheeto Chicken on a stick or the very interesting Fruity Pebbles Shrimp Fried Rice Bowl.

As for rides, you can take a spin on the new Jurassic-themed Raptor Coaster or the pirate ship swinger called the Sea Ray.
