Len Cannon

Len Cannon calls Houston the friendliest big city in America.

He joined KHOU 11 News in 2006. His daughter is a Texan; she was born the following year.

Cannon co-anchors the 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. newscasts.

He also gets out into the community and does stories, including profiles on outstanding Houstonians and a popular segment called "Len at Work."

In "Len at Work" he has done every job from rodeo clown, (yes he got in the barrel and got knocked around by a bull) to going through Houston Police Department SWAT training. And he learned a few tricks from the Harlem Globetrotters.

Cannon grew up in Troy, Ohio and is a graduate of Ashland University in Ohio.

He started his career in Cleveland on the radio.

Then he moved on to work TV news jobs in Toledo, New Orleans, Seattle and New York.

He spent seven years as a correspondent for Dateline NBC.

He has won Emmys and the prestigious Columbia University DuPont award for his reporting.

Len emcees dozens of events for various organizations every year.

He also visits several schools to talk about broadcasting as a career.

His wife is the founder of Parentspost.com.

How long have you lived in Houston?

I moved to Houston in April 2006.

What is your favorite mobile app?

Pandora, love to have my favorites at my fingertips anytime.

Where is your hometown?

Troy, Ohio. A small town just north of Dayton. Quiet, friendly place.

What is something you wouldn't leave the house without?

My mobile phone.

What is your favorite part of working in television news?

Meeting people from all walks of life, being able to tell their stories. Covering some of the greatest events, and significant moments of every City I've worked in. For example, I lived in New York on 9-11 and we were on the air for more than 90 hours covering Hurricane Ike here in Houston back in 2008.

What is your favorite movie in 2012?

Favorite movie was Lincoln.

What are you reading right now?

Just finished the amazing "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand. I am finally starting to read "Outliers."

What are your favorite foods?

I like most foods but Italian is probably my favorite.

What kind of music do you like?

I started out as a Disc Jockey on the radio, so I love all kinds of music, from Soul to Jazz to Classical. I love great singers like Sara Vaughn, Luther Vandross, Donny Hathaway and Celine Dion, etc..

Who is your favorite band?

When I was a kid, Time magazine called Earth Wind and Fire the baddest band in the land. End of story!

What is one thing you dream to do?

Play the piano, but I think it's too late!

What is one thing people might be surprised to know about you?

I am a twin. My sister is three minutes older!

What is your favorite vacation spot?

My wife and I have been blessed to visit a lot of countries. Italy is probably our favorite country.

Where was your last vacation?

We went to New York City for the holidays.

Do you have any siblings?

I have two brothers and two sisters. We live all over the country.

What else might we like to know about you?

My favorite hobbies are playing tennis, reading and travel.
