Few teams have more unrestricted free agents than the Houston Texans. The team is set to lose 16 players off the 2017 roster once free agency opens next week.
The number might seem high, but the relative quality of the players is not.
Of those 16, only safety Marcus Gilchrist made the list of the top 100 free agents at Over The Cap. Gilchrist checks in at No. 69 and the comment for his ranking is hardly gushing,
“Did enough this past season to remove stigma of Jets years and move back into solid veteran money.”
He’s sandwiched between “niche player” Taylor Gabriel and Zach Brown, who garnered “not a lot of interest” in his last bout with free agency.
Among the more prominent Texans who are pending free agents, both starting offensive tackles failed to make the list. Neither Chris Clark nor Breno Giacomini are to be found, nor is starting guard Xavier Su’a-Filo. It’s a bit of a stunner to not see veteran cornerback Johnathan Joseph on the list, however.
