At 78, Dr. Donald Elliot, a resident of The Buckingham senior living community, has amassed many years’ worth of memories with his children. His children now live in different cities across the country, as their careers and relationships have taken them on different paths. The older you get, the more valuable a memory becomes, and Father’s Day is a perfect time to reflect on those special moments. A retired pediatrician from the East Coast, Dr. Elliot has a unique bond with his daughter; Eugenia, whose musical talents have taken her across the country, yet seems to always bring her back to her father in Houston.

Music has always been a part of Dr. Elliot’s life having had a mother who was a choir teacher. When he and his wife began their own family, car rides were soon turned into mini concerts, as the family would have sing-alongs and harmonize with one another.

“Family vacations were so special,” said Dr. Elliot. “We would listen to eight-track tapes of show tunes and just have a ball. All of my children played or continues to play a musical instrument, so music is something that bonded our family.”

At the age young age of 7, Eugenia sang in public for the very first time in a summer production of Cinderella. Although she is also an accomplished flute player, her passion has always been singing. Now living in Chicago, Eugenia has made her mark on the Chicago music scene in a wide variety of musical genres. She not only performs, but she also has been successful in the realm of studio recording.

“Music is my passion and music has the ability to change people’s lives,” said Eugenia. “Music has the power to build relationships, help communicate and also help heal.”

In 2008, a very special moment happened. With the dream to see her husband and daughter perform together, Mrs. Elliot finally made it happen. Eugenia came to Houston to perform with her father for the first time in front of residents and staff at The Buckingham. After receiving rave reviews from fellow residents, a tradition was born, and Eugenia would return to The Buckingham every year on her parents’ anniversary to perform with her father. A few years later Mrs. Elliot passed away, but the father/daughter duo has kept up with their performances. In April, Eugenia and her father gave their first performance of the year to a full house at The Buckingham.

“Our performances together are so sweet and very special to me,” stated Eugenia. “When we sing together it brings back so many memories of when we would sing together as a family growing up. Now the performances are like a dedication to my mother, who was always supportive of my musical dreams. I love my dad so much and I appreciate him so much for wanting to continue to try new things. He’s an inspiration to me.”

“Eugenia has always had a big heart and nurturing soul,” said Dr. Elliot. “Words cannot describe how special it is to be able to share these moments with her. I’m very lucky to have the family that God has given me. I look forward to many more Father’s Day celebrations.”
