On a whim, 8-year-old Zoe Hetman decided that it would be fascinating to learn how to play the violin. She joined Amy Price’s Suzuki Methods class, a style of learning that begins with hearing the music, then reading the notes, and has been playing in the class for the past two years. Now ten years old, Zoe is ready to perform at more public appearances with the rest of Price’s class, which is made up of students who are between the ages of four and eleven. Zoe is moving from book one, for beginners, to book two, for more intermediate songs. The kids recently showcased everything they have learned so far, at a special performance for residents at Parkway Place.

“Playing the wooden violin has been a really enjoyable experience for me,” shared Zoe, a student at Rummel Creek Elementary School. “I have more fun when the music is challenging. It makes me concentrate more, and gives me a feeling of accomplishment when I hit the notes in a perfect sequence. I find it more fulfilling to be faced with a
challenge.”

Zoe used to play the piano, but has decided that the violin is a preferable instrument for her to play. Zoe is interested in continuing to play the violin through middle school and high school.

“Eventually I want to learn how to play an electric violin,” expressed Zoe. “There are two types that really intrigue me, the stingray and the viper. The stingray is a really small violin and the viper is a triangular violin. They both look cool to me.”

Zoe thinks that performing at Parkway Place was similar to performing in front of her grandparents. Previously, when she has played for her grandparents, they have been very impressed with her progress and her energy. They are proud of her for starting something new and different.

“I have faced a few challenges while learning how to play the violin,” shared Zoe. “I started when I was eight, and it was hard for me to read sheet music. Then I faced the challenge of incorporating my fourth finger while playing. Sometimes it is difficult to learn the fast-paced music. I like the way Miss Price teaches her class though. She takes it slow and teaches me to learn the music by ear first, and then she walks me through the entire piece.”

“Like any careful teacher of any subject, I try to provide my students with encouragement as well as information,” expressed Amy Price, teacher of the Suzuki Methods class and private lessons for students in the Spring Branch ISD district-wide Elementary Strings Program. “I like the Suzuki emphasis on music instruction as being a part of character development. Suzuki Methods is a style of teaching that focuses on the overall environment and how that can enhance a student’s learning abilities.”

Zoe’s two favorite songs that she has learned so far are Suzuki Allegro and Suzuki Allegretto. She is very proud of her accomplishments in book one, and looks forward to learning additional music in book two. Zoe believes that the group will get bigger and better over time. She relayed that Miss Price has games that make learning the music fun and that everyone in the class is motivated to get better.

“It is ideal to start at age four or five, because if you practice just a little bit every day, not only do you progress, eventually you cannot remember a day without your violin in your hand,” shared Price. “It’s a great way to build a habit, and good habits form the basis of a successful life when you are older. I really enjoy interacting one-on-one with the kids during private lessons. There’s nothing like watching an ‘aha!’ moment happen.”

Parkway Place hosted the performance for the residents and their families. The community finds it important to schedule musical performances for the residents, as research has shown that music is one of the most engaging forms of entertainment for aging seniors. The students played classic songs, which drew a connection with the residents.

“Music is important for all generations of people,” voiced Price. “Art of all kinds feeds the spirit, it connects us to the past through music written and played by long-ago musicians, the discipline required to learn an instrument is portable to other efforts, and it’s fun!”

“We were delighted to welcome Miss Price’s Suzuki Methods class to Parkway Place for an evening of intergenerational fun,” expressed Shannon Schmidt, assisted living activity director, Parkway Place. “Music is one of the most engaging activities for seniors of all ages, and we feel that this evening will be a special way to showcase the talent of the youth and their performance of classical music.”

With Earth Day in April, many people are spending time outdoors with nature. A dozen Daisy Girls, first grade students from Frank Elementary, found the perfect way to do this by grabbing some shovels and heading to The Village at Gleannloch Farms for a wonderful intergenerational event. The girls recently completed their “It’s Your World – Change It!” journey by earning the “Golden Honey Bee Award.” In order to receive this award, the girls had to take action in their community and participate in a planting project. The Girl Scout troop selected The Village at Gleannloch Farms as the location to plant flowers and make life even brighter for the residents. While there for a planting party, they also heard stories from 85-year-old resident Eleanor Reiners who spent many years as a Troop leader when her four daughters were young.

“Girls who join Girl Scouts are interested in learning, and it helps them build confidence to do things on their own,” said Reiners, Village at Gleannloch Farms resident. “It is especially important these days when so many kids come home from school and turn on television. They are separated from one another, and this allows them to get into groups and do things that interest them.”

The Troop selected The Village at Gleannloch Farms because they live nearby, and it is a part of their community. Not only did the girls plant flowers, but they were able to interact with the residents and learn valuable lessons.

“The girls were able to talk to a resident who was a former girl scout,” said Nicole Castillo, Troop 13587 Co-Leader. “She showed them her uniform that was about 80 years old. Then Mr. Adams gave a tour of his personal garden and allowed the girls to pick carrots and snap peas to take home. The whole day was a wonderful experience for everyone.”

When the Daisy Girls approached The Village at Gleannloch Farms about the project, the staff and administration immediately agreed to the partnership. Anytime the local school kids can stop by to visit and learn from the residents the senior living community always opens its doors.

“Everyone looked forward to the planting party for weeks,” said Kathy Johanns, executive director of The Village at Gleannloch Farms. “The residents always enjoy talking with and spending time with children from the area. It warms my heart to know that they chose our community as the place to do this project.”

here would you find a community of adults that recycles over 62 tons of paper annually, holds electronic recycling drives, utilizes CFL bulbs in its campus buildings and provides its residents the option to receive correspondence electronically?

A college campus? Maybe.

Eagle’s Trace retirement community in Houston? Absolutely.

The residents of the Erickson Living retirement community raised awareness and demonstrated that “Going Green” is a lifestyle with its annual Earth Day Recycle and Donate event on Monday, April 22nd.

Residents and guests enjoyed the opportunity to recycle a variety of products, including paper, large & small electronics, cell phones, medical items, chemicals and clothing (for donation).

A recycling truck was on campus, and the community demonstrated a hybrid vehicle demonstration via Westside Lexus.

Notably, residents of Eagle’s Trace partnered with students of the Big Little School in Houston. Elementary students designed Earth Day-themed posters for the event and brought items to recycle from a drive held at the school on April 15th.

Becky Ogle, a resident of Eagle’s Trace, served as a coordinator for the event. “We are so proud of not only the tangible recycling results from today’s program, but also the enthusiasm generated from Earth Day,” described Ms. Ogle. “We value the opportunity to do our part in small ways, and sharing the ‘going green’ philosophy with the students from the Big Little School was rewarding.”
