CHRISTIAN SPANISH RADIO STATION CELEBRATES 20 YEARS!
Although, “Radio Amistad”, Friendship Radio, 1400 AM has been broadcasting and operating out of Houston for the past 20 years, it has only been 2 years since its signal can be heard clearly in the greater Houston area. Its tower was originally built in Galveston and then moved to League City to enable its outreach to the city of Houston. This versatile Spanish language radio station has expanded to the states of Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama. With the purchase of 91.1 FM in Kerrville, 105.1 FM Seadrift, and 1410 FM Huntsville, the Texas Spanish speaking community has been able to enjoy the Christ centered programs of Radio Amistad.
The purpose of Radio Amistad is to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ in Spanish, just like its English language sponsoring station KHCB 105.7 FM founded in 1962. The vision began forty nine years ago with a group of committed individuals who saw the need to establish a Christian radio station with 24/7 programming and without commercial interruptions. Serving as its general manager, Bruce Munsterman continues to fulfill this mission under a Board of Trustees headed by Pete Steigerwald.
KHCB is financed solely by listeners and community members who support this ministry. From the beginning, KHCB dedicated ninety minutes to Spanish programs which were broadcast at night. KHCB continues to do so as part of its ministry to the Hispanic community even to this day. Throughout the years, the KHCB ministry has expanded with the purchase of more than 20 Christian radio stations throughout Texas and Louisiana.
Under the direction of Dolly Martin, “Radio Amistad” has been broadcasting sound Bible based programs such as, Focus on the Family, Insight for Living, Family Life Today, live interviews, and a variety of Christian music appealing to the Hispanic audience. This music reflects the influence of many Latin American countries as well as Spain. You can listen to Christian music with a salsa, mariachi, tango, or a contemporary flavor together with traditional worship music. The station also broadcasts for a few hours in Vietnamese and Chinese on weekends.
The host, and general director, Dolly Martin, conducts daily interviews targeting the special needs of our growing Hispanic community in Houston, its surrounding areas, as well as communities in Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina. The general themes of these interviews include topics on health, education, finances, and immigration with professionals in each of these areas.
As a result of faithful contributions from its listeners, KHCB is able to broadcast all its programs without charge to the different Christian organizations that air their programs on KHCB.
The staff and volunteers at KHCB and its Board of Trustees invite the public to join them in a special anniversary celebration on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at the First Baptist Church of Houston located at 7401 Katy Freeway; Houston, TX 77024. This special event will begin at noon with educational workshops on Immigration, Legal Aid, Domestic Abuse, College Scholarships, Social Security Benefits, Personal Finance, Marriage Counseling, Health, and Leaderships Skills.
