Ken Hammond, a resident of The Buckingham senior living community, recently received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for his work with AT&T Pioneers, the company’s volunteer network. The President’s Volunteer Service Award was founded to recognize and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. AT&T nominated Hammond for this celebrated award which is granted through the office of the President of the United States and includes a personal letter and special pin.
“Mr. Hammond willingly gives his time each and every week to help those that are in need,” said Cathy Lightfoot, director of sales and marketing at The Buckingham. “I cannot think of a more deserving person for such a prestigious honor than him.”
Hammond has been a part of the AT&T Pioneers for nearly 10 years, and volunteers his time repairing talking book machines used to assist those that are unable to read standard print material due to visual and/or physical impairments. As a volunteer with the program, Hammond works in conjunction with the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped and the Library of Congress to repair and refurbish cassette and record players used in the Talking Book Program. In 2009, the program refurbished nearly 50,000 cassette and record players.
“I truly enjoy volunteering for this program,” said Hammond. “Some of the machines I repair are used by residents here at The Buckingham, and that brings even more joy to me when I can actually see my work help my friends.”
