HOUSTON— A Crime Stoppers tip led to the arrest of a man who allegedly murdered a young mother of two last week.
Last Thursday Vanessa Rodriguez, 23, was gunned down in her apartment in the 8500 block of Pitner in the Spring Branch area. Rodriguez was home with her 18-month-old daughter when she was shot. The baby wasn’t harmed.
The gunman took her cell phone and left. Investigators said they believe robbery was the motive.
Houston Police Department homicide detectives had to travel to Donna, Texas in The Valley to find the man they believe is responsible. Neil Mukherjee, 20, has a criminal history and is now being charged with capital murder.
Rodriguez’ husband was at work when she was shot. Josefino Ortega expressed happiness over the arrest but said it won’t bring his wife back. He also said he is thankful that someone called Crime Stoppers with a tip.
“We have to help each other like community, you know, because like I said, that thing happened to my wife, tomorrow the next day, it could happen to anyone, so let’s help each other,” Ortega said.
Mukherjee was taken to a jail in the Valley. He will likely see a judge on Friday before he is extradited to Houston.
