SPRING, Texas -- Imagine opening your front door to find someone waving a two-foot long sword. That’s what happened to one woman at the Stoneleigh Apartment complex on Spring Cypress Road in Spring, and she wound up in the fight of her life.
Karen Torres loves tending to her potted plants, but her peaceful pastime was shattered with a bang Thursday evening.
“I heard all this bizarre noise and I just opened it, and there was a lady bent over killing my plants,” said Torres.
Investigators said Humera Mahmood was whacking at the plants with a sword.
“And I stood here astonished and I said, 'What are you doing,'” said Torres. “She came at me in a rush with that sword and I immediately tried to swing the door shut, but she was quick.”
Karen was suddenly in a fight for her life.
“I’ve got to get my door shut, or this poor, crazy lunatic is going to kill me,” said Torres.
Torres grabbed the sword and pushed. She cut her hand, but got the door closed. The woman kept hacking at the door.
“At one point, I was holding the bolt shut, trying to hold my hand close so I wouldn’t bleed too much and calling 911 going, she’s trying to get in,” said Karen.
Then she said Mahmood stopped and grabbed the one plant she hadn’t killed.
“My poor little palm,” said Karen holding it up.
Karen said Mahmood took the palm across the parking lot, where she dug a hole with the sword near a tree and tried to plant it.
“A lady with her child pulled into the parking space and they’re going to carry in groceries," said Torres. "She attacked them.”
Another neighbor came to the rescue, but the mother was still hospitalized with more serious injuries. Harris County Deputies said Mahmood ran when they arrived and they had to use a taser on her. She’s now charged with aggravated assault.
Torres said it’s more important that she gets some help.
“This poor soul had some sort of complete mental issue here,” said Torres.
She also wants people to learn from her close call, and be more cautious if you hear something strange outside.
“I paid for it with 11 stitches and if I hadn’t gotten that door shut, I could have paid for it with a whole lot more than that,” said Torres. “This is a nice heavy metal door, thank God for it.”
Torres said her attacker actually lives in the apartment right above her. She said she’s heard some strange noises, but never expected anything like this. No one answered when KHOU 11 News knocked on that door.
Torres also wanted to thank the neighbor who stepped in and emergency responders for their quick action.
