HOUSTON -- Lightning was blamed for several fires in the Greater Houston area Wednesday.
The worst fire badly damaged a home in the 12300 block of Terrace Cove in the Cypress area. A pet dog was trapped inside and died in the fire. No one else was hurt.
About 20 minutes after that fire was out, a home on Hillside Glen Trail was struck by lightning. Bob Overton, his wife and daughter heard the smoke alarms going off, and then Overton saw his couch go up in flames.
"This fire moved fast and before we could start to do anything, to get anything, we had to get out," said Bob Overton, the homeowner.
Everyone made it out safely.
The Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department got the blaze under control quickly, but there’s a lot of smoke damage in the house.
Lightning also reportedly struck a house and caused a fire in Jersey Village.
And lightning was blamed for a small fire at the Panera Bread near FM 1960 and Eldridge.
"We were pretty busy this afternoon," said Robert Rasa, a Cy-Fair firefighter. "We had several fires, several automatic alarms, several motor vehicle accidents."
