HOUSTON –  High winds created a challenge for firefighters battling a 3-alarm fire Monday at a north Houston apartment complex.

The fire broke out at about 10:51 a.m. at the Worthington apartment complex located in the 1300 block of Greens Parkway.

Flames moved quickly through three buildings, damaging about 60 apartment units, officials said.

Fire officials said the strong winds mixed with smoke, heat and embers created "smoke tornadoes" that spread the fire.

“I opened up the front door and it was all smoke,” said Laura Huston. “So I grabbed the baby and just ran through it.”

Fabian Douglas and his fiancée were in such a rush to leave that they      forgot about their little puppy and begged firefighters to save her.

“I found the captain, had the captain ask some firefighters to get her out because I mean we lost everything else, so I was hoping at least she would have her puppy. An engagement present,” he said.

One person suffered minor injuries, but everyone escaped safely.

There was no word on how the fire started.
