HOUSTON—If you thought the backups on the Gulf Freeway were bad, brace yourself because it is going to get worse before it gets better.

The reconstruction of the Gulf Freeway is heading further south.

This will be the second phase of the construction that will eventually expand the Gulf Freeway from Beltway 8 south to Medical Center Road by adding HOV lanes and an extra freeway travel lane in each direction. It will also add a feeder road lane in both directions.

“Well it has been pretty bad. It is going to get a lot worse. Going to get a lot worse before it gets better,” said one driver.

Eight businesses, including a very popular Chick-fil-a restaurant, are falling to the bulldozer. The Chick-fil-a closes for good on Friday.

The operator of the business said it has secured a location north of Bay Area Boulevard at El Dorado, but that new restaurant will not open until fall at the earliest.

The total freeway construction will not be complete until spring of 2016.
