HOUSTON – Two dozen suspected illegal immigrants were found crammed into a van outside a southwest Houston home early Thursday morning, said officials with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Men, women, and children were among those in the van.
It was sometime before 5 a.m. officers with the Houston Police Department said they spotted a couple of suspicious people sitting in a parked U-Haul van near Hillcroft Avenue and Edgemoor Drive. When police approached, they said the two people in the front seats jumped out and ran.
Officers peered into the van, expecting to find stolen items, but instead found 24 people. Police initially reported that 27 people were found.
I.C.E. agents were called in to question and handcuff the suspected illegal immigrants, all of whom were taken into a nearby home. The homeowners spoke with KHOU 11 News and said their property was not used as a stash house.
All of the men and women were then taken from the scene in an I.C.E. van.
I.C.E. said an investigation is ongoing.
