San Antonio police said traffic was moving slow when the truck driver went over the bridge and had nowhere to go. The man struck two vehicles with his 18-wheeler before losing control and tearing through the concrete median.
The truck driver had to be rescued from the wreckage by emergency workers, according to officials at the scene. A woman riding in one of the cars that was hit was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.
AirLIFE was called to the 4200 block of N. Loop 1604 westbound, between Bulverde and O'Connor roads, to provide medical assistance, according to Deborah Foster, a spokesperson for SAFD. The truck driver was transported to University Hospital via helicopter and is expected to be OK.
The 18-wheeler rolled over right before the Bulverde Road exit, during rush-hour traffic. Both sides of the highway were closed while crews worked the accident.
Eastbound traffic was being diverted off Loop 1604 at the O'Connor Road exit. Westbound drivers were able to get back on the highway just passed O'Connor Road.
Authorities said they would test the integrity of the bridge and cleanup all spilled diesel fuel before the lanes were reopened.
