Raw: Firefighters battle Houston apt. fire

HOUSTON -- Firefighters early Thursday responded to a two-alarm apartment fire on the northwest side of town.

The fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. at the Cancun Apartments on Wirt Road, according to the Houston Fire Department.

One resident and a firefighter sustained non-life threatening injuries and were sent to the hospital. HFD said the firefighter hurt his back after falling through the floor of a second-story unit. The resident's injuries were not described.

KHOU 11 News cameras were at the scene and rolling as the two were put on stretchers and taken away from the burning building. Both appeared to be alert and talking to firefighters.

According to HFD, a total of seven units were heavily damaged with four of them completely destroyed. There were no reports of any other injuries.

As of 5:15 a.m. firefighters were still battling the blaze. It was put out sometime before 6 a.m.
