HOUSTON – A man was arrested Thursday after a chase across three counties ended in Waller County with the suspect’s tire blown out.

The police chase with the white Chevrolet Suburban began around 4:20 p.m. on TC Jester and 24th Street in Houston. Police said they attempted to pull him over because the vehicle he was driving was suspected in burglaries in that area.

Houston police said the suspect drove from the Heights area through Shady Acres and Garden Oaks before heading onto Interstate 10 through Katy during rush-hour traffic.

The chase reached speeds up to and over 100 MPH.  Air 11 Video showed there were a few close calls with other vehicles.  An 18-wheeler driver attempted to help officers halt the suspect by pulling the rig in front of the vehicle, but the suspect was still able to escape.

Houston police officers also tried to throw out spike strips to stop the vehicle, but were unsuccessful.  Texas Department of Public Safety troopers joined the chase as it moved through Fort Bend County toward Waller County. Precinct 5 Constables also got involved.

A DPS trooper pulled up next to the suburban and shot out a tire around 5:15 p.m. That’s when the suspect stopped on an overpass located just east of the Brazos River. He exited the vehicle and dropped to the ground with his hands and legs spread out. Then officers approached with guns drawn and took him into custody.

The suspect identified himself as Hector Torres to KHOU 11 News Reporter Jeremy Desel and said that he ran from police because he was drunk.

When asked why he would run and put so many people at risk he said, ‘I didn’t hit anybody.’

Precinct 5 deputy constables also took a man into custody who was accused of interfering with the chase by attempting to pull in front to take photos.

There were no injuries reported.
