Chief Meteorologist Gene Norman takes a closer look at a disturbance being tracked on this first day of hurricane season. Major development into a strong or large system isn't expected due to how fast the system is moving now even though the system is moving into 80° Gulf water. If the system drifts toward the Texas coast, there's a good chance we'll see some much-needed rainfall in the Houston area from Saturday through early Monday. Boy do we need the rain, as the deficit climbs to 12" and record breaking heat is expected Thursday. We fell one degree short of a record today with a high of 97°. Tomorrow's record is only 98° and we should easily shatter that. A little tropical rain without the other ill effects of a full blown tropical storm or hurricane would be welcome, even if it comes on the weekend.
