HOUSTON - Before Mike Decker came along, athletics were out of the question for homeschoolers in the Houston area.

However, 20 years ago, Decker and others were tired of having their kids left out, so he formed the Homeschool Christian Youth Association.

The Warriors, a local basketball team for homeschooled athletes, is coached by Karl "Tuffy" Rhodes, a former Astros player who finished his pro baseball career by playing 13 years in Japan. He has a son on the team and volunteers his time.

Warriors teams have won seven of the last eight National Homeschool Championships, so the tradition of winning is great.

They hope to continue their winning ways this week up in Springfield, Mo.
