HITCHCOCK, Texas — A train derailed early Friday in the middle of Hitchcock, shutting down roads and, "making a big mess," the city’s police chief said.
No one was hurt when nine rail cars went off the tracks and there are no dangerous materials leaking from the train, Hitchcock Police Chief Clay Kennelly said.
The BNSF train was headed southbound on a rail line that runs parallel to state Highway 6 when the cars left the track at about 1:30 a.m., the chief said.
Two of the car that derailed where tanker cars, but those stayed upright and were not leaking, Kennelly said. The rest of the cars are hopper cars that were carrying plastic pellets.
