HOUSTON—What’s more perfect that a warm and gooey grilled cheese to warm you up in the cold?
The folks at The Golden Grill food truck have made their mark on the food truck scene by being the first grilled cheese truck in town, and fans come out even in the cold weather, just to get a taste.
Matthew Pak, 29, opened the food truck two years ago, after the successful launch of his first food truck “Koagie Hots,” which serves up Korean-themed cheese steaks and hot dogs.
At The Golden Grill, Pak offers a variety of grilled cheese combinations, ranging from “The Classic” to his most popular “Green Eggs & Jam” (tomatillos, fried egg, smoked gouda, and homemade jalapeno jam). Forget your basic “American on white bread” grilled cheese – this one is full of unique flavors that put a sophisticated spin on this comfort food classic.
The self-taught grilled-cheese connoisseur gets much of his inspiration from his childhood in Rochester, New York.
“My mom fed us grilled cheese with jams and jellies when we were younger, it’s what I like, so I gave it a try and people loved it,” Pak explained.
Customer Chris Chambers agreed.
“This is like grown-up grilled cheese on good local bread,” he said.
After working for catering businesses, country clubs, and restaurants on both coasts, Pak followed his heart to Houston, to be with his then-girlfriend, now-wife Monica. That’s proof that it pays to follow your heart and your passion.
“I don’t look at it as a job for me, I look at it as what I like to do,” he said.
