HOUSTON – An after-school fight ended in gunfire Friday afternoon near Katy in northwest Harris County.
About 100 students had gathered for the fight near a bayou in the 19000 block of Sandelford near Cypress Lakes High School.
During the melee, someone pulled out a gun and started firing into a crowd. According to deputies, one student was either hit by a bullet or badly beaten.
“Everybody just started running and then I see some guy had blood all on his face,” recalled Amad Diaz.
A neighbor named Kevil Arnold said he pulled over and scooped the 19-year-old victim up and placed him in the bed of his truck.
He planned to take him to the hospital until he heard an ambulance coming.
“At that time, I stopped the ambulance that was on the way and they took over from there and called Life Flight,” he said.
A Life Flight helicopter rushed him to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center. He is expected to survive.
The students were from Cypress Lakes High School.
Residents say the fights have become all too common.
“This is right next to the school so pretty much as soon as they’re off school property they feel like they can come out here and get it on,” said Jacob Bowers, a student who lives nearby. “The neighbors and everybody are getting sick of it, I guess, because they’re calling the cops and stuff now.”
Several students were questioned at the scene, but there’s no word if any charges have been filed.
