HOUSTON, Texas—A suspect in a stolen U-Haul van took Metro police on a chase Thursday after a bystander spotted him stealing hubcaps off cars in the Reliant Park and Ride lot, officials said.

The bystander flagged down officers who tried to stop the man. The man then took off and crashed his U-Haul van on Fannin and the Southwest Freeway. The suspect took off on foot and cops were able to capture him.

Inside his wrecked van, police said they found several hubcaps taken off cars parked in the Metro lot. The suspect wasn’t happy to be under arrest and wasn’t happy to see our cameras.

“Get that camera out of my face, I’m going to spit on you,” he yelled to a KHOU 11 News photographer.

Metro police said they routinely patrol Park and Ride lots and have 24-hour surveillance. However, riders said they don’t always feel confident the lots are secure.

“I guess the cameras can catch it, but by that time that happens, they’ve already done what they needed to do,” said Christina Craft. “It can happen in broad daylight.”

Police are reviewing the surveillance tape to see if they caught a glimpse of the suspect messing with riders’ cars. They hope to use that as evidence to send him to prison.
