HOUSTON -- The best Supercross riders in the world will be racing at Reliant Stadium on Saturday. One of the top riders to keep your eye on is Andrew Short.

Short grew up in Colorado, but his wife, a former Supercross rider, is a Texas native, so they moved to the Lone Star State.

Now at age 30, Short is at the top of his profession. He and his wife and two small children live on his ranch near the Colorado River that’s complete with his very own motocross track. He says he’s living a life that he could only dream about when he was a kid.

“Not many people can say that they can wake up and live their dream,” said Short.

After competing the last 11 years as a professional, Short is now coming to grips with being the “elder statesman” on the tour:

“Now that I’m older and I’m 30, I don’t think I’m crazy. It’s been a passion and a love to ride motorcycles my whole life, so I don’t think it’s anymore crazy if I was 19 or 30,” laughed Short.

Short said even though many guys might ignore advice they get from their wives about their jobs, he always pays attention to his because she used to ride competitively.

”I actually have to listen because she knows what she’s talking about,” he said. “She’s a racer herself, so I definitely get some tips here and there.”

Short said he’s been riding motocross bikes since he was five years old, and he’s lost count of how many bones he’s broken. Still, he believes injuries are a part of his job and he doesn’t worry about them.

“The most recent one I had to come back from was when I broke both elbows. That one was very difficult,” said Short.

Now, 100 percent healthy again, Short is ready to ride on Saturday in Houston.

He said he feels blessed that he can make a living competing in the sport that he loves so much.

“For me it always seemed out of touch,” he said. “Now, it’s very cool to be able to make it and live it and enjoy the ride.”
