HOUSTON – Imagine walking into your backyard shed and coming face to face with a python.

That’s what happened to a woman named Mary in northwest Houston this week.

"And I saw the snake right over there. It was huge," Mary said. "I was petrified. I said, ‘How did that huge thing get in here?’"

Mary didn’t want to give her full name because she’s afraid her friends and Bible study group will be too frightened to visit her home.

She called an expert to trap the four-foot-long snake. Tim Moss identified it as a ball python, so named because of the shape it often takes.

Moss said the snakes aren’t typically dangerous to people, but they could be a threat to small pets.

"These are not poisonous by any means but you don’t want to get these snakes going because when they get this size or a little bigger, then they start becoming a problem for pets," Moss said. "So you’re looking at small dogs, cats being missing."

Moss believes the snake was a pet that escaped or was let go by someone who didn’t want it anymore. He plans to turn it over to a snake collector.

Mary is just hoping the python didn’t leave behind any slithering buddies.
