HOUSTON -- A Houston girl celebrated her sixth birthday Thursday with a surprise visit from her stepfather.
Pfc. Kenneth Galan was home from Iraq and visiting Houston for 15 days. Celeste was shocked to see him walk into her classroom at South Belt Elementary.
Galan said the thought of coming home is what keeps him going while he's away from his family.
"It's all you think about over there. [When] you're over there you are doing your mission,” he said. “When there's down time you just want to go home."
After Celeste gave her stepfather a big hug and kiss, she appeared to be speechless.
"I think she is really surprised,” said her mother, Jessica Galan. “Now it's going to begin when she gets home. I am not going to have any time with him at all."
Galan said he keeps his stepdaughter's picture with him at all times.
His wife said he should return home for good just in time for the holidays.
