HOUSTON – A man was airlifted to the hospital after his vehicle was struck by an 18-wheeler in north Houston early Saturday.

It happened near the intersection of Tidwell and Fairbanks North Houston around 3 a.m.

Authorities said an SUV made a right turn onto Fairbanks North Houston from Tidwell and did not yield to traffic. An 18-wheeler that was traveling north on Fairbanks North Houston then slammed into the SUV.

The big rig passed through the median and stopped in the southbound lanes facing north.

The driver of the SUV was airlifted to the hospital in serious condition. It was not known if the driver of the 18-wheeler suffered any injuries.

Fairbanks was closed in both directions for several hours while authorities investigated the scene.
