HOUSTON—The man who fatally shot his friend’s wife at a gas station in southeast Houston Saturday evening appeared before a judge overnight.
James Lawrence McCarty was charged with murder in the death of 33-year-old Cyril Chatman Jones.
McCarty, another woman, Jones and her husband—who was friends with Chatman – were riding around Saturday when they pulled into a Valero gas station in the 7500 block of Scott Street around 7 p.m.
The two men went into the store while the two women remained inside the van.
According to court documents, McCarty allegedly became agitated when the clerk declined his credit card and walked out, leaving Jones’ husband inside the store.
McCarty then walked up to the van, where Jones was sitting in the front passenger seat, and began speaking to her. For some reason, McCarty pulled out a .25-caliber handgun, pointed it at Jones’ head and fired once, killing her.
The entire incident was captured on surveillance video.
McCarty also fired three shots at a witness who tried to intervene, but the good Samaritan still managed to wrestle McCarty to the ground and hold him until police arrived.
McCarty’s bond was set at $50,000.
Jones was the mother of a teenage girl.
