HOUSTON—The same scene has been playing out all across the Houston area: Thieves in stolen trucks crash into businesses, steal cash machines and peel off.

Eventually they ditch the truck and machine, leaving thousands of dollars in damage behind.

“That is crazy, they steal someone’s truck and drive it through a window,” customer C.J. Jackson said, “Been happening a lot here.”

It has happened nearly a dozen times in recent months.

On Thursday alone, it happened twice. The first strike was at the Champions Mart on Champions Drive near FM 1960. The second was at the Valero on Knight Road near Reliant.

But this time the morning did not go smoothly for the bad guys. Police say they arrested two suspects. Three others were able to get away.

Investigators are not saying for sure if the men are linked to some of the other crimes, but they are not ruling it out.

Detectives say they were able to gather fingerprints from earlier scenes. In one case, a surveillance camera captured the image of a crook whose mask had fallen off.

It is still not clear just how large of a ring investigators are dealing with. But if it is one ring responsible for a lot of the cases, Thursday’s arrests may bring them closer to cracking it.
