HOUSTON—A former volunteer firefighter arrested in connection with a blaze investigators say may have been intentionally set at George Bush Park appeared in court for the first time Saturday night.
HFD arson investigators said Lonnie Ray Henderson, 28, was seen at the scene around 11:45 p.m. Thursday. The fire, which was dangerously near residential areas and businesses south of the Katy Freeway, scorched about 27 acres before crews could get it under control.
Henderson was a volunteer firefighter at the West I-10 Volunteer Fire Department about a year ago, the fire chief confirmed.
Henderson’s been charged with impersonating a public servant.
“He was seen driving his ATV in the hot zone of the burn area. He was wearing fire gear. HFD fire gear. He told our investigators that he was there responding and he had reported the fire,” said Houston’s Fire Marshall Chief Richard Galvan.
