HOUSTON – A pet owner has developed a first of its kind app called Finding Rover that uses state-of-the-art facial recognition technology to reunite lost dogs with their owners.
John Polimeno said he came up with the idea three years ago.
“It actually started three years ago, sitting in a coffee shop with my wife and we looked up and saw a lost dog poster, and it brought back some terrible memories of a dog we lost,” Polimeno said.
If you lose your dog, the Finding Rover app alerts other users within a 10-mile radius. If you find a dog, you can take its picture and compare it those in the database, hopefully reuniting it with its owner.
The app was only up-and-running for just five weeks and 20,000 users had signed up.
“It's all free,” Polimeno said. “We're not charging.”
