HOUSTON—Charges were read Thursday against a mother of 10 accused of killing her 5-year-old daughter in southwest Houston Wednesday.
Rosa Gonzalez initially told police her daughter, Candy Flores, died after she fell off a toilet and hit her head on a tile floor, but changed her story a short time later.
Gonzalez admitted she jerked the child out of the shower and caused her to hit her head on the side of the tub, according to police. It was not the first time she had been rough with the little girl.
Police said Gonzalez also confessed to physically abusing the child her entire life.
Officers said the 10 children, ranging in ages from 10 months to 21 years old, were squeezed into a tiny one bedroom apartment and Candy was the only child that appeared to have been abused. They don’t know why the mother targeted her.
Police said Gonzalez, who is in this country illegally, was charged with injury to a child. Those charges could be upgraded to capital murder.
