HOUSTON –  A woman is sharing her heart wrenching story of losing her young daughter in an awful traffic accident on Highway 242.

“You feel dead inside,” said Kaaona Montgomery.

The 21-year-old mother said she can’t erase the moments after the deadly crash that killed her 4-year-old child Kalana.

“The only thing I can see is her image and what she looked like,” said Montgomery. “No one should have to see that and I will for the rest of my life.”

Instead, Montgomery wants you to remember Kalana as the girl who loved pink, the daughter who couldn’t live without mom. Now mom has to live without her.

“The last thing she said was, ‘I love you mommy,’ and I said it back,” Montgomery said.

It happened Tuesday morning as their car approached a bridge on Old Houston Road, northwest of New Caney. Montgomery lost control and slammed into the guard rail. Troopers said speed could be a factor.

“It pinned her in between the seats,” said Montgomery.” “I jumped out of my car and jumped to the other side and tried opening it, but it wouldn’t open.”

Kalana died a short time later.

Fatal wrecks have happened there before. Memorials are up and down old Houston Road. The Texas Department of Transportation said there have been 12 traffic-related accidents in the last four years. Six of those have resulted in injuries, or even death.

“People always speeding over,” said Candice Craighead. “It’s constant. It’s supposed to be 45.”

But Craighead said drivers go a lot faster than that.

“It does break my heart,” said Craighead.

After this latest tragedy, she said something needs to be done, so no one else has to bury their children.

“You feel like life has been taken from you,” said Montgomery.

Kalana will be laid to rest Saturday in Kingwood, Texas.
