SAN ANTONIO, Texas—An abused monkey is getting a new chance at life at a refuge near San Antonio.

Keepers have named the long-tailed Macaque Freeman. For most of his life, he was kept in a small cage, given dog food, forced to drink alcohol and smoked marijuana.

Freeman never got a chance to socialize with other monkeys.

"Monkeys like to do what monkeys like to do when they want to do it and being denied that his entire life—it drives them literally crazy," said Tim Ajax from the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary.

Keepers say they’re working on finding a friend for Freeman. He’ll soon be able to have his pick when more than 100 Macaques are added to the sanctuary.
