HOUSTON – Mayor Annise Parker says the city of Houston has reached its goal of cutting the homeless population by half.

The number of chronically homeless has dropped from 1,400 in 2012 to a little more than 700 now, according to Mayor Parker.

Mayor Parker started a pilot program two years ago where the names and needs of the homeless were put in a centralized database that’s accessible to all shelters and service providers.

The city of Houston is also working on a website so the public can more easily learn how they can help the homeless.
