HOUSTON – With the mercury soaring into the triple-digits and a heat advisory in effect, Houstonians were doing their best to stay cool Wednesday.
Some of them were having an easier time than others.
If he stays at home, Northeast Houston resident Alvin Love has to beat the heat without A/C.
Love, 79, has lived in his one-room apartment for years, and all he has to keep cool is a box fan.
So, like many others, he went to a neighborhood cooling center Wednesday to wait out the worst part of the day.
Older folks and kids are most at risk when extreme heat hits, so the city has set up cooling centers to keep them safe.
And it’s a good thing for people like Love, who said there’s no way he could stay in an apartment that seems more like an oven than a home.
