HOUSTON – Memorial Day may not be until Monday, but people across the Houston area began playing tribute on Saturday with several community events.
Ambassadors for Homeless Warriors sponsored Walk a Mile in Their Shoes on Saturday as people gathered on Solo and Noble in northeast Houston. The event is meant to raise awareness for veterans struggling to survive after they return home and others who have become homeless.
In downtown, a memorial for service was held for soldiers killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Veterans for Peace and Code Pink labeled U.S. and Texas flags for each of the nearly 600 Texans killed in both wars.
Then a special service was held at Discovery Green.
Austin High School held its seventh annual Memorial Day service. They were honoring 65 alumni killed in four different wars: World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Afghanistan.
Flags and wreaths were placed at the school’s Fallen Heroes Wall.
